Data dictionary open cell id - geolocation details

Hi,

please can you describe how the x,y are determined. Is this the data from the base station? Is it based on real DB measurements? Is it the center of gravity / “Schwerpunkt” of a geometry?

Best,
Georg

We get coordinates of cells from measurements submitted from our data contributors. A measurement is essentially:

  1. GPS position of the device
  2. Cells that the device is able to scan at that GPS position
  3. Other attributes like signal strength etc…

We get millions of measurements everyday. We take all that data and process it to get locations of cells. It is an approximation of the position of a particular cell.

We do not get any data from the base station or the telecom firm operating that base station. We get the identifiers of cells which is generally in the form of MCC-MNC-LAC-CID
